As a Research Engineer who joined us in February 2023, Aggela is deeply involved in our AI mixing and mastering projects, pushing the boundaries of audio production every day. Her journey from sound engineering to the cutting edge of AI in audio offers an exciting glimpse into this innovative field. In our conversation, she shares her experiences, discusses the latest trends in AI mixing and mastering, talks about the exciting projects she's worked on, and offers advice to those interested in stepping into this transformative domain. Let's delve into the world of AI and audio with Aggela and discover what makes her work so compelling.

Q: How did you first get into the field of AI mixing and mastering?

A: My professional roots are firmly planted in sound engineering, however, I was always fascinated by the evolving trends in audio technology. This fascination led me to earn a PhD in computer science that specialised in automated mixing for hearing loss, a path that introduced me to the expansive potential of AI in audio technology. This new perspective, coupled with my initial expertise, has allowed me to excel in areas of emerging technology like AI mixing and mastering - a cornerstone of our work here at RoEx.

Q. How do you integrate AI mixing and mastering into your research approach at RoEx?

A: As I navigate the research landscape at RoEx, I constantly juggle two personas - the studious researcher and the seasoned audio engineer. This enables me to honour the traditional artistry in our industry while simultaneously pursuing innovative solutions. My prime focus is on leveraging the power of AI in creating groundbreaking music production tools. It's all about fusing the old and the new - retaining the essence of music while shaping its future with AI mixing and mastering, thus empowering a wider community of music creators.

Q: What emerging trend in the AI and audio sphere is currently most exciting to you?

A: One of the most fascinating trends I'm observing in the AI mixing and mastering landscape is the growing adoption of advanced natural language processing models, like Chat GPT, within audio production tools. I see enormous potential for creativity and innovation in this intersection, and it's an area I'm thrilled to explore in-depth. At RoEx, we're particularly intrigued by the emergence of generative AI in our field - a trend we're actively monitoring and looking forward to incorporating into our workflows.

Q: What have been the most exciting projects you've worked on in the realm of AI mixing and mastering, either at RoEx or during your research?

A: My research during my PhD, which focused on human perception of sound and audio accessibility, has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences. It provided me with deep insights into the individual nuances of hearing and psychoacoustics. These insights have significantly informed my approach to AI mixing and mastering projects.
Equally exhilarating was the recent creation of Mix Check Studio here at RoEx. This project allowed me to channel my skills as a sound engineer into the design and development of a tool that is now being used and appreciated by a wide audience to refine their mixes (60k+ mix/masters diagnosed at the time of publication). The experience was a testament to the transformative potential of AI in enhancing the audio experience.

Q: What advice would you give to those aspiring to join the world of AI mixing and mastering?

A: As an evolving and thrilling field, AI mixing and mastering is full with pioneering developments that you could be a part of. Encouraging out-of-the-box thinking and maintaining an open mind is crucial. However, I would urge any newcomers to this field not to overlook the human essence inherent in our industry. Remember to appreciate the artistic value and emotional resonance of music and sound. Strive always to enhance and facilitate creation through your work in AI and audio, balancing technological advancement with the core human elements of music.

Q: What are your 3 favourite songs/albums of all time?

A: This is an impossible question for me to answer, so I will go with the first 3 albums that come to mind:

Led Zeppelin - III (although I mean their full discography)

Pink Floyd - Animals

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius

Q: What song/album do you have on repeat right now?

A: Currently alternating between “Remnants” - a 2011 release from the Greek crust/hardcore band Sarabante and “Close” - the 2022 release by the Italian doom metal band Messa. These two are definitely a part of my daily afternoon routine!

Q: What item would you take with you to a desert island?

A: Definitely my guitar(s)! Not very practical for survival I know, but would definitely help me keep my sanity in solitude.
